SAP Datamigration - 4 puzzle pieces for success!

Aktualisiert: 5. Jan. 2020

Data migration in every SAP project has a central position and is a key factor for success inside the project. The slide from SAP on the cover page shows the general steps to perform within the data migration process. Errors on the process in the data migration project stream are normally punished with delays or compromises in data quality which end up in difficult GoLive situations.

What do Analyst say:

Bloor, 2007: More than 80% of data migration projects run over time and/or over budget. Cost overruns average 30%. Time overruns average 41%.

Gartner: 80% of organizations… will underestimate the costs related to the data acquisition tasks by an average of 50 percent”

Reasons for that are easy to imagine. We from Brainster AG target to avoid such unpleasant situations by following our already many times executed data migration process.

- Reduce Risk in getting data migration involved already in early project phases to know the key areas

- Migrate data with high quality by using standards to support correct business processes

Milestones defining packages:

1) Workshop to Define Migration Objects

Following the business process of the implementation migration objects will need to be defined together with their source and target systems

duration - 2 to 3 days

2) Integrate milestones for data migration into the overall project plan

The high level project plan is part of the agreement for the targeted data migration as a fixed price package. It is developed together with the customer. The milestones for each GoLive step will be integrated.

duration - 1 to 2 days

3) Define packages for each migration object

For each migration object following points will need to be defined so that a fixed price can be offered.

define extraction formats and fields

define transformation rules

define load formats and fields

duration needs to be determined based on workshop results of I and II.

4) Fix content for each migration package

The high standardisation makes it possible to fix already in early stages the content and effort for the migration objects. Fixed prices guarantee a secure investment into the new IT infrastructure.
